How To: Formal Table Settings At Your Wedding

If you’ve ever been to a formal sit-down restaurant, you’ll notice the many different forks, spoons, and knives surrounding your table setting. Unless you went to charm school or attended an etiquette class–you may find yourself confused as to what to use for what course. We have the lowdown on what utensils to use, when to use them, and how to set a formal table setting at your wedding!

The rule of thumb when it comes to picking up the right utensil is to start from the outside and work your way in. The first course, your appetizer, you would use the soup spoon or the salad fork. For your main entree, use the dinner fork and dinner knife. The exception here is the teaspoon.

For your wedding, if you’re not planning on having wine or coffee served during the meal, you will only need the water goblet for your table setting.

If you’re planning on having a buffet, here’s the table setting we’d suggest:

 

Keep in mind this is a formal setting for a buffet at your home or if you were doing the catering on your own. Most hotels or venues will set it up slightly different depending on space and convenience. But this gives you an idea of how to set up a formal table setting at your wedding or event!
